Do It Yourself Domain Name Registration

Even though companies like ours are in the business of helping people set up their domain name you may be surprised at how easy it is to do it yourself.
If you are starting a new company, own an existing company or run an organization it is relatively easy to actually register that domain name yourself and set it up so that it can be hosted and go live online.
The first step is to decide on a domain name for your business or organization. The domain name can be anything you wish, as long as it is available, but normally includes your company or organization name or relates to what you do. There are a number of companies you can register with but I use GoDaddy.com.
Once you are on GoDaddy's web site, you would fill in the desired domain name right in the field on the main page, for example "XYZcompany". Next from the pull down menu at right you would choose the extension you would like to have such as.com,.net,.org, etc. Once you have chosen your extension you then click GO and the resulting page will tell you whether your domain name is available or not. If not, then you may need to tweak your domain name at little until you have an available domain. It may be a good idea to come up with a list of domain names you would like to register from the most desired down to save time.
Once you have a domain that is available, on the resulting second page you will also see a list of available extensions, your domain is available in as well. You may also want to register multiple extensions of the same domain name, which you can do. For example you may want to register XYZcompany.com as well as XYZcompany.mobi for your mobile site. If you do not want anyone else to have the same domain name with a different extension you may want to register as many extensions as you wish to. To save some money click on, "Continue To Registration", to get the option of purchasing multiple extensions of your domain at a discount. You may be able to get up to sixty five percent or more off bulk registrations.
Once you have decided on what domain/s you wish to register you will be offered many options including hosting, email, and privacy registration. Registering your domain as private protects your identity. If you choose not to register it privately anyone can look up the particulars about the domain with a "Whois" search, including the person or company that owns the domain, address, email, phone number etc.
Once you have gone through the process of registering and paying for your domain you will receive a confirmation email which should include your login and password for your account. As of registration your domain will be "parked" GoDaddy or at what registrar you use. All you have to do is change the "nameservers" in your account to be able to host your domain with what ever hosting provider you choose. The company you choose to host with will provide you with their name servers.
Once logged into your account click on "Manage Domains", choose the domain, click on 'Nameservers" ands insert the two nameservers of your hosting company.
Registering your domain yourself will save you money since some web design companies may charge a large fee to do this for you. Check the yearly price for registering a domain and try to register it yourself and you may be surprised at how easy it is. For more information on web hosting see the author box below for a link.
